Drone Illegally Transporting Handguns From US to Canada Foiled By Tree

A large drone successfully transported handguns from the United States into Canada last week, before getting stuck in a tree, according to Canadian police.

On Friday, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in Lambton County discovered the drone, carrying 11 handguns, in a tree near Port Lambton — located just a few miles from the U.S.-Canada border, between the Michigan ports of Algonac and Marine City.

According to CBC in Canada, the weapons had been concealed in a plastic shopping bag, and the OPP were searching for the drone’s operator as of Tuesday.

The OPP West Region had the following Twitter post on Monday:

“How are illegal guns reaching the hands of criminals in Canada? Recently, #LambtonOPP found that drones are being used to carry the prohibited guns over from the United States. This drone was located Friday morning near Port Lambton, stuck in a tree, transporting 11 handguns.”

Jeremy and Christine Ackwood reportedly own the property involving the tree and seized drone. The couple told CTV News London their neighbor had witnessed someone in the Ackwood’s yard with a remote control in the middle of the night.

Citing that report, Christine Ackwood said the stranger was “startled” by the Ackwood’s neighbor, lost control of the drone, and then crashed the machine into the large cluster of trees.

The suspect apparently then ran into a waiting vehicle and fled the scene.

At the time of the drone incident, the Ackwoods had reportedly taken a trip to Las Vegas.

The investigation remains ongoing.

According to this website, “Firearms are federally regulated in Canada. The federal 1977 Criminal Law Amendment Act, as amended, prohibits automatic weapons and sawed-off shotguns and rifles. It is illegal for anyone, except (for the most part) the police and the military, to possess them.

“The law restricts handguns by requiring a registration certificate to possess them and a permit, issued under limited and temporary circumstances only, to carry them. The only people who can obtain a certificate are: (1) police and other security personnel, (2) members of bona fide gun clubs, (3) bona fide gun collectors, and (4) people who demonstrate a need for handguns for self-protection.

“As a prerequisite for registration, a prospective handgun owner must obtain a firearms acquisition certificate. The law, with minor exceptions, restricts the magazine capacity of handguns to 10 rounds.”
